WEEMS or WEMYSS
Seton Castle
Seton Castle is considered a representation of Scottish "baronial architecture" that was built in the late 18th century, between 1789 and 1791, by the famous architect Robert Adam. The original Seton Palace was demolished after the Jacobite uprising of 1715 and the present castle was constructed right over the former structure called "Seton Palace" which had been a favorite retreat for Mary, Queen of Scots.
Robert Adam's design for Seton Castle was to make it a modern interpretation of a medieval castle, using elements of the "Gothic Revival" style. The castle is equipped with turrets, battlements, large windows, and a series of walled units to turn the structure easily into a fortification if necessary. The design, though, was not for military efficiency but to combiner the romanticism of a medieval fortress with the comfort of an 18th-century mansion, a luxurious residence for the owner and guests.
"...For more than two centuries, Seton Castle was owned by the family of the Earl of Wemyss, before being sold in a state of near ruin to the property developer Mary McMillan in 2003 for £1.3 million. She undertook a massive 18-month restoration programme, which saw Seton Castle returned to its former glory. That process was further embellished by its next owner, the entrepreneur Stephen Leach, who bought it in 2007 for about £5 million (making it Scotland’s most expensive home at that time also) and oversaw yet more upgrades and improvements..." – UK The Times June 2024
